Given that the Australian and New Zealand releases of August 1966 seem to be the first appearances of the revised stereo mixes, it is possible that the eight changed tracks on the revised album were remixed just after the US release, when it was noticed how far adrift the mono and stereo versions were.

Whatever the chronology, the detailed nature of some of the revised editing points strongly to the direct influence of those involved in the original recording.  It doesn't seem likely that a staff engineer would take the decision to delete specific phrases from Robbie Robertson's lead guitar playing on "Visions Of Johanna", for example. However, one person who doesn't seem to have been involved is original producer Bob Johnston.  When questioned in the late 1990s about the stereo mixes of Blonde On Blonde, he was clearly under the belief that the original mix was still the one in use.
